Exploring Our Reformed Faith

"Encountering God: Christian Faith in Turbulent Times"

Dr. Andrew Purves will lead our 2001 Exploring Our Reformed Faith seminar on November 16 and 17. He will also preach on Sunday morning. His topic is Encountering God: Christian Faith in Turbulent Times. Dr. Purves is a nationally recognized leader, speaker and author. We are honored to have him here at the Old Scotch Church!

Currently, Dr. Purves is the Hugh Thomson Kerr Professor of Pastoral Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he received degrees in philosophy and divinity from the University of Edinburgh, and a Th. M. degree from Duke Divinity School. His Ph.D. is from the University of Edinburgh.

Licensed by the Church of Scotland, Dr. Purves came to the U.S. in 1978. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in 1979, where he served as minister of the Hebron Presbyterian Church in Clinton, PA, until 1983 when he joined the faculty of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Dr. Purves has a deep concern for the faithfulness of the church, and speaks regularly around the country on matters of theological and spiritual renewal. His publications include "The Search for Compassion, Union in Christ (with Mark Achtemeier), A Passion for the Gospel, Confessing Christ in the 21st Century (also with Mark Achtemeier,) and his latest book Encountering God: Christian Faith in Turbulent Times, which he co-authored with a friend Charles Partee. It is truly an honor for us to host Dr. Purves, a speaker and writer with a national reputation.

Here are some details: The first seminar session will be held Friday, November 16 from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, November 17, there will be a morning session, lunch, and an afternoon session (9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.). Due to a wonderful gift to our congregation, we are able to keep the registration fee for this event to $25.00 per person which includes the lectures, materials, snacks, and continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Circuit Rider Books of Oregon will be at the seminar with related materials available for purchase.
